How Wholesale Sewing Machines Work

There are almost as many wholesale sewing machines as there are tailors. Manufacturers of wholesale sewing machines have come out with scores of features that fit every skill level, profession, and budget. Priced from $50 to $5000, wholesale sewing machines can either perform a variety of different functions or can specialize in one particular task. Wholesale sewing machines are a marvel of engineering and technology, especially in the mid-1800's. For example, the loop stitch is a very simple stitch to do by hand. The thread is tied to the tiny eye of a needle. The sewer then pokes the needle ad thread through two pieces of fabric down one side, and then repeats the process back up again. The result is a stitch that loops thread in and out of the fabric and binds them together. With a sewing machine, it is a little more difficult to perform. A machine would have to poke the needle through one side of the fabric, and then release it. It would then need to somehow pull the needle and thread through the thread's entire length past the fabric. Then it would have to turn around and reverse the process.

Instead of performing the stitch like a person would, a sewing machine passes the needle only part of the way through the fabric. On a sewing machine needle, the eye where the thread passes through is at the point of the needle instead of at the top end. The needle is attached to the needle bar, which a motor drives up and down through a series of gears and cams. Once the sharp end of the needle goes through the fabric, a small loop of thread is left from one side to the other. Under the fabric, there is a mechanism that grabs the loop. It can then either wrap it around another piece of thread, or it can make another loop in the same piece of thread. Brilliant in design, a sewing machine can do more than a loop stitch. It can perform chain stitches, lock stitches, and just about anything else that can be done by hand.
